For individuals that have had a traumatic or acquired brain injury it can be extremely challenging to get back to the life the person had before this occurred. The most underserved deficit after a brain injury is behavioral services. The person may have a difficult time displaying appropriate emotions, may not be able to connect with family members or friends, have challenges completing tasks that were easy in the past, may not be able to understand or complete homework or do previous job skills, have impulse issues, become angry or frustrated easily, may not be able to organize and display many other challenges.
Behavioral issues associate with a TBI, ABI, or congenital brain disorder can include:
- difficulty displaying appropriate emotions
- difficulty understanding socially appropriate behavior
- having boundaries with others
- lack empathy
- difficulty connecting with family members or friends
- challenges completing tasks that were easy in the past
- may not be able to understand or complete tasks
- not be able to do previous job skills
- have impulse control issues
- organize thoughts
- become angry or easily frustrated
- engage in repetitive behaviors
- lack desire to engage in meaningful interactions with others
- lack desire to engage in previously rewarding activities or hobbies
- behavioral inflexibility (inability to get off a topic or activity)
- engages in arguments easily
- verbal aggression
- physical aggression
